KENYA TEA INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS FOR APRIL 2018
Tea production for the month of April 2018 was 44.57 Million Kgs, against 31.45 Million Kgs recorded during the corresponding month of 2017. The increase in production was largely attributed to the onsetof the long rain season which was experienced both the East and West. In the West of Rift the output rose from 21.64 Million Kgs to 26.22 Million Kgs. Consequently, good production was recorded within Plantation sub-sector with output increasing from 13.92 Million Kgs to 16.42 Million Kgs. The output within the East of Rift increased from 9.81 Million Kgs recorded in April 2017 to 18.35 Million Kgs owing to more enhanced rainfall compared to the same period of last year. Similary, production within the Smallholder sub-sector increased from 17.53 Million Kgs to 26.15 Million Kgs.
Cumulative production for the period January-April 2018 was significantly higher by 18% to stand at 144.34 Million Kgs against 121.55 Million Kgs recorded during the corresponding period of 2017 owing to good weather conditions.

During the month of April 2018, 34.41 Million kgs of Kenyan tea was sold through Mombasa Auction against 25.33 Million kgs recorded in April 2017. The average tea auction prices for Kenyan tea for the month of April 2018 was lower at USD 2.67 per Kg against 2.87 for the corresponding period of last year owing to enhanced supply.
Cumulative average price for first four months of 2018 was also lower at USD 2.84 per Kg compared to USD 2.98 for the corresponding period of 2017.
The exports for the month of April together with the four months cumulative will be released later.
Local tea consumption for April 2018 stood at 2.45 Million Kgs against 2.20 Million Kgs for the corresponding period of 2017 while cumulative tea consumption for the four months period upto April 2018 stood at 9.54 Million Kgs against 9.28 Million Kgs for the corresponding period of 2017.
