Kenya Tea Industry Performance Report - 2023 February

Tea production for the month of February 2023 dropped significantly by 8.22 Million Kgs to 32.73 Million Kgs from 40.95 Million Kgs recorded in during the same period of last year. Production during the month was also much lower compared to 54.91 Million Kgs recorded in January. Notably, this was the lowest production ever recorded during the month of February since the year 2020. Significant drop in production was occasioned by adverse sunny and dry weather conditions in most parts of the tea growing areas with exception of a few places in the West of the Rift Valley (Nandi, Kericho, and Bomet) that experienced occasional rainfall (few rain days). Temperatures were also high and above average consequent to which tea bushes in some of the tea growing areas experienced intense moisture stress, and in some instances, dried up.
