Kenya Tea Industry Performance Report - 2025 May

Tea production for the month of May 2025 was lower by 4.38% (2.38 Million Kgs) from 54.52 Million Kgs recorded during the same period of 2024 to 52.13 Million Kgs. However, it was slightly higher than the output recorded during the month of April 2025, which was 51.78 Million Kgs. Though the month of May 2025 marked the end of the "Long Rains" season across most of parts of the country, several regions of the country such as the central highlands and some parts of the West of Rift recorded below-average rainfall. Consequently, tea output within the West of Rift Region dropped by 4.82 % (1.72 Million Kgs) from 35.87 Million Kgs recorded in the month of May last year to 34.14 Million Kgs. Within the East of Rift, output dropped by 3.54% (0.661 Million Kgs) from 18.65 Million Kgs to 17.99 Million Kgs. Across the producers, smallholder tea factories under the Management of KTDA were the most affected recording a production decline of 10.9% (3.36 Million Kgs) from 30.87 Million Kgs during the corresponding month of 2024 to 27.51 Million Kgs. The Estates factories recorded a marginal production drop of 0.23% while the state-owned Nyayo Tea Zones, which has coverage in the West and East of Rift recorded reduced output of 26.62%. However, the independent/ private tea factories recorded significant increase in production of about 10.01% (1.13 Million Kgs) from 11.28 Million Kgs to 12.41 Million Kgs.
